As the temperatures drop in winter months,
water main breaks become more common.
Cold makes things shrink.
Despite being buried below the frost line, both the ground outside the pipe
and the water inside the pipe are much colder in winter than in summer.
This causes the pipe segments to shrink, putting tension on the joints,
and increasing the chances that one will fail.
During periods of fluctuating temperatures ~
when it is below freezing one day and in the 50’s then next,
this causes an expansion and contraction of the pipe material, weakening it.
Also, the ground can actually shift during these freeze/thaw cycles,
and this can cause additional stresses on pipes.
Residents connected to broken water mains
will sometimes experience low water pressure.
And, when water rushes rapidly from a punctured main,
it can stir up some of the sediment that forms at the bottom of the channels
and tint tap water a rusty, red-orange color.
Anyone observing water running across streets or sidewalks is encouraged
to contact the District office at 740-927-0410.
District Inspectors are on call 24 hours a day to handle any report.
